Do You Affirm Yourself?: 3 Ways to Affirm Yourself Daily

Affirm (v)- offer (someone) emotional support or encouragement.
Affirmation (n) - the action or process of affirming something or being affirmed.

When was the last time you have affirmed yourself? Why is it so easy to affirm someone else but you neglect your own affirmation? Before you can affirm someone else, you must affirm yourself first. You can't go around and encourage others and wish others well if you fail to do it. That is called people-pleasing and we will discuss that in another post. You must put yourself first at all times because you are all that you have!

I remember graduating from graduate school with my Master of Social Work, my mother dropped her everlasting wisdom before and on that amazing day. My mother said, Andrea before you can heal, help or encourage someone, you must do the same for yourself first. My mother proceeded to say, you are your first client/patient and I will always be a work in progress. If you are always neglecting your emotional needs, how in the world can you affirm and help others?

When you affirm yourself, your mindset shift. and you will be unstoppable. Affirming yourself is essential because you have to stand firm and encourage yourself through difficult times. Every day, I affirm myself before I get out of bed, get dressed, drive, work, and etc because I am preparing for any given situation that crosses my path. We have to stay strong and affirm because anything can happen at any given time and we must prepare ourselves and make rational decisions.

Are you ready to affirm yourself? Here are three ways in which you can affirm yourself:

  1. Make an affirmation wall: In my walk-in closet, I have created a visual affirmation wall in which my husband and I can see on a day-to-day basis. Every day, I go in my closet to pick out clothes to wear and iron them. While I am in my closet, I recite my affirmations daily before I head out the door to face the world. I recite my affirmations out loud so I can confirm myself to my higher being and set the tone of my day. If you have space in your home start an affirmation wall. You can write them down and tape them to a visible location in which you can see them on a daily basis.
  2. Text or Journal Your Affirmations:  We live in a technologically savvy world in which we are glued to our phones, tablets, Macbooks, and computers. Technology is so cool to the point that we can send reminders to our phones, email, and text ourselves. If you are a tech-savvy individual, and you want to start affirming yourself, text yourself, email yourself, or even set a reminder to affirm yourself. We are bombarded with life but you must set aside time to affirm yourself and thank yourself for being an amazing being. If you are like me and like to write down every single thing, you can get a notebook and start writing down your affirmations to yourself. Every day, you should open your notebook and read what you affirmed yourself the day prior and go from there.
  3. Affirm Yourself Everywhere: Instead of listening to music or your favorite morning radio show, affirm yourself on your way to work. You can start by breathing in and out slowly and in between each breath, affirm yourself. Breath again and affirm yourself. 
Once you start affirming yourself, you will start to notice how strong and unstoppable you are. Start today and build it into your daily routine. Here is an easy affirmation to remember: I am loved and I will honor myself! Remember, you are an amazing and wonderful creation!
