Going into my 3rd year as an Assistant Professor and Director of Field Education in the social work department can be time-consuming since I am a one-woman show. You have to manage your time wisely. Academia and corporate America operating hours are similar but different. For those of you who are new to the academia space, please manage your time wisely.
Here are some helpful tips:
1. Use digital calendars such as Google, Outlook, or phone for all appointments, meetings, and events. It is life-saving because this will help you to become more organized.
2. No when to say no to projects and extra tasks you cannot fit into your calendar. Many of you may be tenure-track like me and must provide service, research, and scholarship. Still, you must know your limitations and stay calm during the first year of academia.
3. Use your office hours wisely. You may have three to six hours of office hours a week. Use this time to grade papers and any University-related activities. Post hours to let students drop in or schedule time for advisement, coaching, or support.
4. Self-Care! Time management helps you to stay on task and organized. Take the semester one class, one project, one publication, one research at a time. Take care of yourself and limit your stressors by not over-committing to busyness. Ensure you eat, hydrate, breathe deeply, stretch, laugh, move your body, connect with your support system, rest, recover, and repeat.
