Through My Lens: Post-Therapy Thoughts at the Lake

                                                            Jesus wept. So did I.

After my therapy session, there were no words left.

Sometimes words can't carry the weight of what you're feeling.

Sometimes you just have to get still, listen to God, and cry.

Through My Lens: Learning to Love the Lane I'm In

Sometimes the most beautiful views aren't found at the destination, they're waiting beside the road while you're simply moving forward.

Photo by Andrea Stallworth | Brown Girl From Boston

There was a time when I spent more energy looking at everyone else's lane than appreciating my own. I measured timelines, compared milestones, and wondered if I was somehow behind. But somewhere along this journey, I realized that peace doesn't come from changing lanes. It comes from learning to appreciate the one God has already placed before you.

These days, I'm not in a hurry. I'm building my health, strengthening my faith, growing my career, nurturing meaningful relationships, and making room for joy. Every mile has taught me something. Every detour has shaped me. Looking out this window reminded me that life isn't just about arriving; it's about noticing the beauty that exists while you're on the way.

From the South With Love!

“Don’t try to convince anyone that you’re a good person. Quit trying to win someone over who isn’t kind, but only tolerates you-you don’t need their approval. Be kind, be respectful, but you don’t have to stay… go where you are celebrated. Keep living forward and trust that the right people are there. You never need to convince anyone to love you." -Anonymous

Happy 2020! We made it another year, another decade, and another day. I am still here in Bama living my best and simple life. I am celebrating every moment and minute because sometimes we often take advantage of where we are in the journey and want to rush through the process of despair, hurt, and embarrassment. Everything that you are experiencing is preparing you to be resilient. Now, people think resilience is just being gritty, mentally tough, and Teflon Don strong. Nah. Being resilient is to understand how to recover from pain, trauma, drama, and shame. Being resilient is having the ability and confidence to learn and navigate past experiences without staying stuck and defeated.

This year is my 3rd year living in Alabama and I am enjoying my experience thus far. I am easing my way into relationships (old and new), brought my 1st home in April 2019, learning new coping strategies, skills, hobbies, and learning how to chill. I am still battling this mysterious illness, but each day I am getting stronger, whole, and healed. I have to give many thanks to my acupuncturist who discovered that I was misdiagnosed and wasting my time taking a medication that I didn't need.

Was I hurt? Of course, but like Diddy said, "You can't hold me down. Oh no, I got to keep on moving." Not only do I have to keep on moving, but I have some healing and restoration to do as well.

I am thankful I found a place or the place found me where I can be loved, celebrated, and be carefree when I want to be. I understand life isn't perfect and life is what you make it out to be. Being a realist who has a clear understanding of self-awareness and a sense of self, I prefer to focus on feeling better holistically and having the ability to help others to do the same. There are some days, I am not my best. There are some days, others have to pick up my slack.

There are some days, I want to go awf (off) on folks who are miserable, mean-spirited, abusive, angry, and negative. Then I take a step back and analyze and let them know that they are "out of pocket" and "out of order." That's called setting boundaries, standing up for yourself, and being assertive. It's okay to tell a negative, abusive, negative attention seeker, manipulator, narcissists, control freak and, a destructive person that's out of order. It is okay to leave the Tic for Tac messages unread. It is okay to love yourself enough to walk away when pettiness is being served. It is okay to stand alone and be at peace within.

The blessed don't beef with the petty.

I just want to send major love, light, peace, healing, wholeness, positivity, resiliency, prosperity, and everything dope your way. This year will require you to step all the way up to be accountable, responsible, and organized. No more being tolerated, baby. This year it is all about being celebrated.

Young, Black and Broken: A Colorful Journey to Healing

"I've been on the low key grinding
(Grindinggrindinggrinding)
Learning on the low key, shining
Tryin' to keep to myself
But you bring me out of character
Every time again" -SZA, Go, Gina,

Happy New Year! What can I say about 2017? Well, it was filled with trials, tribulations, and triumphs. Yet, I've managed to survive and thrive. I became the poster child for the "Young, Black, and Broken" because I was that person in 2017! How Sway?

I was diagnosed with Chronic Anemia. Anemia is a condition in which you don't have enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen to the body's tissues. Having anemia may make you feel tired and weak. On top of being diagnosed with anemia, I was also diagnosed with Uterine Fibroids. Yikes. Uterine fibroids are benign lumps that grow on the uterus. Symptoms may include heavy periods, cramping, painful sex, and an urge to urinate. Over 80% of African-American women will suffer from fibroids by the age of 50.

YoI felt as if my life came crashing down at the same damn time. I had to cancel numerously speaking engagements and outings because I was that ill and broken. I had to schedule things around my menstrual cycle because my cycles were uncontrollable. My illness debilitated my whole life, to the point I suffered from depression and anxiety. I couldn't get out of bed. Some days I would just cry my heart out. There would be days, weeks, and some months that I couldn't look at myself in the mirror because I was broken and traumatized. When you can't enjoy, love, and trust the eyes looking back at you, that's brokenness, Flyness.

Besides being broken, you also have others who take advantage of your brokenness. I had to go "hot ham hoe here we go again" on a few people who have taken advantage of my broken nature during this junction of my life. I just had enough of dealing with people, especially women who violated the sisterhood code. I was sick and tired of the f^&kery, thievery, and dishonesty.

Literally, everything around me was falling apart. In February, my husband lost his job. Agh! When a man loses his career, he loses his confidence in providing for his family. The bad news kept coming, which included being denied into a program for 1st home buyers. We took the Ls and kept it moving. I figured we weren't meant to lay our foundation down in New England. Why force something when things are supposed to flow?

While our world came crashing down, my husband and I made a difficult decision to get the eff outta Providence and relocate Down South! Let's recap, shall we! My husband became unemployed in February. The surgery took place on March 31st; we packed our apartment and relocated on April 30th. Yeswe are still sane.

notified ten people about our relocation. On the other hand, my husband went and broadcasted all of our business on the Book! (Insert side-eye forever) Guess what? Everyone, including the fakers, snakes, fair-weather folks, and their Mama, reached out to be nosy! Mind you. These folks don't care about us! All of a sudden, you have a change of heart. Nah!

Dear God, I'm Here!

What Did I Learn During the 2017 Transition:
"Healing Hurts, Healing Sucks"  Since I've been on this journey of healing internally, I have realized life and recovery aren't linear! One minute you are completely okay; the next, you may be rocking back and forth doing the ugly cry because something triggered that unhealed situation.  You have to be vulnerable and ready to heal. Sometimes, healing includes sitting silently! Recovery involves honesty with yourself.  We are never prepared to hear the truth and often try to find an alternative way to heal instead of pain. Hence, we see many people self-medicate because many are in a state of trauma and can't bear to deal with reality. During my healing process, I got to reconnect with some dope people. I still cry from time to time. My marriage almost went to hell, but we are working on being better people and more divine spouses for one another. Another funny and strange thing about healing is when randoms such as exes, users, and old friends try to creep back into your life. Chile, who are you and what do you want?  I had to regain my strength, independence, and my holistic life. God is taking the wheel. I am letting ish go. I had to let my life crumble and rebuild. I am rebuilding and trusting the process like the Philadelphia 76ers.

I Am Learning How to Love Drea Once Again! Loving yourself is a long-suffering, everlasting, cold, warm, FLY, humbling experience. Yo, self-love, and healing are scary. AF is exciting, carefree, ugly at times, sassy, FLY, rhythmic, Divine, spiritual, and Godly. Self-love is vital but complicated.  Self-love is a learned behavior that is somewhat innate. You would think it is natural, but somehow down the line, we often unlearn how to love ourselves because we are thrown into this abyss of self-sacrificing and putting ourselves last.

People don't truly trust themselves because they don't recognize themselves, and often they don't love themselves. We get caught up with social media's controlled content, chasing the bag, chasing an illusion, and chasing nonsense. We get caught up with all these things and truly forget about our daily purpose: self-preservation, self-care, self-esteem, self-love, and self-respect. When we neglect these things, we often cheat ourselves and lessen ourselves to accept any low and basic behavior and habits.  Loving myself looks different daily. Loving myself consist of going to a Rapsody concert and allowing the boom-bap rap to uplift my spirit. Loving myself consist of walking away from negativity and toxicity. Loving myself standing on my square and speaking my truth to power. Loving myself consist of rocking me, accepting me, validating myself first in a cold world that often diminishes, degrade, dismiss, and disrespect the Black Woman, the Black Man, and Black Child. Loving myself consist of living an unapologetic, compassionate, and purposeful life.

I also want to give flowers to the following people because they were instrumental in my healing process, and I bet they haven't known until now! So, giving flowers to My Mom, JaquettaBarbyShemikaMarkitaMichelle B., Michelle D., Chantal, Walter (My Mentor) and his wife Josefina, and Ms. Marilyn.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out to me via email and social media to offer light, support, and encouragement during a rough time in my life. I see you, baby, and keep shining.

Thank you for reading this honest, raw, and unapologetic blog post. I hope you will take the time to tap into some unhealed spaces within to heal the pain. Remember to trust your colorful progress and process.

Benton Nissan

I want to debut my first commercial with the Brown Girl Tribe!
I’m excited that I was at least in three shots. S/O to my husband on the commercial, Kenzie, for giving me pointers from acting classes. This isn’t my first rodeo on being on television. I am excited that I was able to have my confidence build up enough to even submit my headshot and portfolio after being diagnosed with hypothyroidism and fibroids which altered my outer looks but didn’t hinder my inner FLYness.
Sometimes, you have to make bold moves to step into your purpose and life Assignment. I’m not saying being an actress is my life Assignment but I’m saying what is for you is for you despite how you may see yourself. While you may temporarily see “ugliness” someone may see beauty and gracefulness.
Keep chasing purpose not paper. Keep cultivating your inner FLYness and beauty. You never know who you are inspiring!
My first commercial with Benton Nissan!

Natural State of Mind!:Celebrating 7 Years Of Returning Back to Natural

"I'd rather see a person with a natural mind and a processed head than a processed mind and a natural head."-Erykah Badu

As of April 26, 2010, I started my journey of being natural. I am one of those Black women whose Mother didn't know what to do with my hair, so she relaxed it when I was 6. Returning to natural hair was liberating because I never rocked it naturally in my teens and young adulthood, and I just knew that the fade would attract different vibes and tribes.  I remember being a slave to harsh chemicals and going to the hair salon twice or thrice a month. I was one of those sistahs who planned workout routines, certain events/dates around my hair appointment, and other things around the condition of my hair. To be honest, I was addicted to getting my hair done, and I was known to my friends, family, and others as the ones to have the latest hairstyles. I always felt that hair is hair just like grass is grass; both things grow while receiving proper treatment. I went from having long hair as a child, bobs, long ponytails, wraps, braids, finger waves, winter ash streaks, short hair, and now my fade! Having just about every hairstyle known to mankind except a Jheri Curl, I was not addicted to a certain style but addicted to the relaxers. When 6-8 weeks came around to get my "touch up," I dreaded that visit to my local beautician. Why you may ask, because I either scratched the crap out of my scalp, which was going to cause a chemical burn, sat in the salon all day, and slept awkwardly to preserve that newness of the recent hairstyle.

When I decided to go natural, I thought loooong and hard about this decision. I thought about how I would transition, whether I would let the perm grow out or do the Big Chop. I thought about my personal thoughts, mindset, family, friends, and disposition as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. When I finally decided to do the Big Chop, everyone's thoughts and feelings disappeared except my own. Everyone could have disapproved of my recent transition, but at the end of the day, it was my own hair and my own decision. We are all human beings who seek social belonging; at the end of the day, I had to live with my decision and adjust to my new look. I am thankful for honest and real family and friends! Big Ups to all of you guys.

I noticed as African American women, we are "defined" by our hair. If your hair is relaxed, it seems as if society accepts you more than being natural. When I went to perform the Big Chop, the professional stylist continuously asked me if I was sure about cutting my hair. I looked at him and insisted he proceeds with the Big Chop. He kept telling me that I was "too pretty" and had "pretty hair" for it to be cut all off!

SN: What is pretty hair? Healthy hair or relaxed hair? If people answer relaxed hair, you are wrong for many reasons, that person's hair may look healthy, but it could be a different story, and putting various chemicals in your hair could stunt the hair follicles, which can stunt the hair growth. I thanked the stylist for his compliments and concerns but told him to proceed with the cutting. He also asked me about my man's concerns, in which I felt he was crossing the boundaries of my marriage. After the Big Chop, all of a sudden, I looked "exotic" and "naturally beautiful," according to the stylist. Yeah, yeah, whatever! LOL!

Don't be afraid of rocking your hair in its natural state. Hair is hair. Hair grows back. Your hair is your crown and glory.
