How Women Can Advance Their Careers and Reach Their Dream Roles (Featured Blogger Kevin Ogle)

Success looks different for every woman — but one constant is the desire to grow, lead, and be recognized for the value you bring. Whether you’re early in your career or aiming for the C-suite, building your path with clarity, confidence, and strategy can change everything.

Define what success means to you — not what others expect.

Build a strong network and ask for mentorship early.

Learn to advocate for your worth with data, not emotion.

Keep learning new skills — tech, leadership, communication.

Don’t wait for permission to start your own thing.

Ask, Don’t Wait — How to Navigate Growth Conversations

Too many women assume hard work automatically leads to recognition. It doesn’t. Prepare to negotiate your value using specific results (e.g., “I increased customer retention by 12%”) instead of vague contributions. Start tracking your wins weekly. Use simple tools like Notion, Google Sheets, or even your notes app. Those receipts matter when performance reviews roll around.

5 Steps to Move Toward Your Dream Role

  1. Clarify your “north star.” Write down what you want your career to look like in 5 years — title, impact, income.

  2. Get visible. Speak up in meetings, publish thought pieces on LinkedIn, or contribute to professional communities.

  3. Cultivate sponsors, not just mentors. Mentors advise — sponsors open doors.

  4. Build resilience. Rejection, slow progress, or bias — it’s all part of the process. Bounce forward.

  5. Audit your environment. If your current company doesn’t value growth or inclusivity, prepare your exit plan — with intention.

The “Own It” Era — Starting Your Own Business

There comes a moment when some women realize: climbing someone else’s ladder just isn’t the goal. Entrepreneurship offers autonomy, flexibility, and creative fulfillment — but also risk.

One smart step? Simplify the setup. Platforms like ZenBusiness help you form an LLC, design a logo, build a website, and manage finances — all in one place. You don’t need a massive budget; you need momentum.

Pair that with reading The Lean Startup for strategy to brand your ideas visually.

The Power Moves List

Find mentors who look nothing like you — diversity of experience equals depth.

Negotiate early and often — the gender pay gap starts with the first job.

Say “no” to roles that don’t serve your longer vision.

Use an all-in-one business platform if you’re exploring independence.

Document your expertise: blog, podcast, or online workshop.

Build “social capital” before you need it. Attend conferences, engage on Eventbrite or Meetup.

Learn financial literacy — try Ellevest or Mint for personal growth.

FAQ — Navigating Work and Ambition

Q1. How do I ask for a raise without sounding aggressive?
Frame it with data. Use phrases like, “Based on market benchmarks and my recent results, I’d like to discuss aligning compensation.”

Q2. What if my company doesn’t support women in leadership?
Leave, strategically. Companies that resist diversity limit your growth ceiling. Research inclusive organizations on Glassdoor.

Q3. I’m balancing family and career — is that even possible?
Yes, but redefine balance as “rhythm.” Some weeks lean into work, others into life. Tools like Todoist can help manage both.

Q4. How do I handle imposter syndrome?
Name it, reframe it, and act anyway. Confidence grows from doing, not waiting.

Featured Product Highlight — Elevating Your Workspace

Let’s talk about productivity. If you often juggle multiple projects, consider upgrading your workflow with Trello. It’s a simple, visual board system that helps organize career goals, side hustles, or team projects. Bonus: it integrates with Slack, Google Drive, and calendar tools for seamless collaboration.

Glossary

Sponsor: A senior advocate who actively champions your career.

Imposter Syndrome: Feeling unqualified despite success.

Glass Ceiling: Unseen barriers preventing advancement for women.

Equity: Fair opportunity and representation — not identical treatment.

Soft Skills: Communication, empathy, and leadership — often undervalued but career-defining.

Every woman’s career journey is a mosaic — built from resilience, mentorship, courage, and sometimes, rebellion. The key is not just climbing the ladder but building your own staircase. So, wherever you are: take the next small, bold step. Your dream role isn’t a destination — it’s a direction. Keep walking.

Get Paid, Not Played: Free Mini Business Plan for Creatives, Social Entrepreneurs and Side Hustlers

Hey Tribe, I have created a free and simply mini business plan that should help all creative and social entrepreneurs to map out your side hustle/small business needs.
1. Your WHY/Mission/Vision- In order for you to upstart your side hustle/small business, you need to know why you are starting in the first place. This is called storytelling/your pitch. People usually connect with you due to your story. We all have a story to share and when you are in business, people want to know your story and you need to know your why. Take a few minutes to think about your why and write it down.
2. #Goals #Goals #Goal: You should have personal goals, professional goals and business goals. These goals will help you and your business to grow. When you sit down to write your goals think BIG because this is "Do or Die" time when starting and growing a business. Don't shrink yourself or your goals. You goals should consist of happiness. How much money do you want your business to make? Location-free business? International business? Local business? This is when you are going to explore your goals, write them down, develop a timeline, 3-5 action plans to achieve goals and get it in. No shortcuts. No shrinking your greatness. Make sure your goals are achievable and realistic.
3. Who is your business for? Your target market? This piece of business is very pertinent because you need to research, know your customer, can they afford your services/products, see your customer before they see you, solve their problems, understand their goals, know where they shop, their hopes, dreams, and etc. You need to flush out this section. Be very descriptive. Give your ideal customer a name. Gender. Where do they live? What do they drive? Martial status? Educational status? Location? Traveler? Nationality? Ethnicity? Music genre of choice? How much do they make? Brands they love? Personality? What they do for a living? What are some things they hope and dream? Volunteer? This will help you to know your customer and start creating products and services based on what you have wrote down.
4. Social Media Platforms/Where are your customers? Do they like social media? Are they on Facebook? IG? Have Twitter fingers? Pinterest? Snapchat? Love emails? Love text message? Where do you clients communicate the most on?
5. What are your services/products? Do you have affordable pricing? Have you sent out surveys and received feedback back? Focus groups? Giveaways and contests? Appropriate labeling? Why should anyone purchase your services/products? How many streams of income can you create from your products/services?
6. Outside Activity: Do you attend vending events? Networking events? Have business cards? Go to conferences? Public speaker? Enter pitching contests? Participate in your local incubators? Chamber of Commerce? ETC
7. How much coins do you need to start your business/side hustle? There are plenty of grants you can apply to start your business. You have loans, micro loans and other kind of business loans. Do you have a separate business account? Can you start your business right now without any funding or funding from your own pockets?
This mini business plan should keep you business. This is the primarily stage to see how to operate your side hustle with a plan and vision.
Please share this mini business plan with your fellow side hustlers, creatives, and social entrepreneurs. Let's get paid and not played for our creativity.

For The Cost Of Sleep: When Hard Work, Staying In Your Lane, and Being FLY Pays Off

Publishing checks and letters from jail
Come to me at the same time, that's my regular mail
Honest, they say the cost of success could weigh out your living
But what it cost for that rest will pay out the difference
And what we on is to the left, made to be different” -Skyzoo, The Cost Of Sleep

I must say that 2016 is the Year of Drea and Brown Girl From Boston. Being a Brown Girl From Mattapan ain't bad. I don't have a magic wand, a special formula, or tap into my connections to obtain opportunities and blessings. I work hard, people notice my hard work, I am a kind person who sow good seeds and pour love and positivity to people, and take advantage of opportunities no matter how large or small. When you are FLY (Fearless, Loving, and You) and staying in your lane, the Universe and people take notice.

I sit back and think about the commitment, investment, losses, wins, opportunities, and heartbreaks I have experienced. Everything that I have asked for within the past via journaling, visualizing, and intimate conversations with my immediate tribe members have manifested. Ever No, I have been given and told have turned into the next opportunity (NO means next opportunity). Times, in which I felt worthless, invaluable, and silenced were time for reflection, tune-up, and adjustment.  When things manifest, The Almighty is like Okay, Drea, chill out because I got you girl (I like to think God has a sense of humor).

Usually, when the manifestation is taking place, I start getting anxious, angry, and frustrated in which I have to have several seats, breathe, and let go of control. (Yes, I have issues with being a control freak over my own things and destiny) When the breakthrough and manifestation occurs, I am going to toot my horn, celebrate, rejoice, and share my good news because I am going through it, Boo.

When I am going through some thangs, it is not cute and I am not cute because I beat myself up, I have dark circles from the cost of sleep or just having a good soulful ugly cry and I have to check myself constantly!

So...I dedicate this piece to "The Cost of Sleep" because when other folks such as my husband, parents, and friends are sleeping, I am sacrificing sleep to move forward with my personal, professional, and holistic development.

For the cost of sleep
And what it cost to sleep
And should you ever doze
You doze cautiously
For the cost of sleep
And what it cost to sleep
The commas in the price tag
They talk to me
Long as you never know
You know all you need -The Cost of Sleep by Skyzoo

For the Cost of Sleep: I have spoken at numerous conferences, workshops, online webinars, and etc in 2016
For the Cost of Sleep: I have upped my writing/blogging game and got published on some dope and major websites.
For the Cost of Sleep: I have realized that I love helping my people start their successful startups which make smile.
For the Cost of Sleep: I have started a book club for Brown Girls to enhance our reading comprehension, instill the love of reading, and have a safe and sacred place to enjoy books by Brown Girls for Brown Girls
For the Cost of Sleep: I have mentored, held space, and advocated for young women of color, mothers of colors, and entrepreneurs of color
For the Cost of Sleep: I realized that marriage is a marathon, not a sprint and it is all a balancing act.
For the Cost of Sleep: I have cleaned house, ended relationships and business relationships, and restored my FLYness
For the Cost of Sleep: I have spent time meditating, thinking, studying, reading, and breathing.
For the Cost of Sleep: I threw myself into therapy to fine tune my energy, to heal, and get the inner answers validated and affirmed.
For the Cost of Sleep: I focus on being the best version of Drea.
For the Cost of Sleep, I refuse to focus on haters and competition because eventually, they are going to fade to black.
For the Cost of Sleep: I have spent time building upon my personal and professional growth and development.
For the Cost of Sleep: I have spent time studying, analyzing people’s behaviors, habits, and what make them tick.
For the Cost of Sleep: I have realized that I prefer 3 quality kind of friendships versus 30 fake and annoying associates who don’t give a damn about your existence
For the Cost of Sleep: I have realized that I rather spend time with my family versus getting lit (did I use it right) and being broke
For the Cost of Sleep: I have realized that I am not forcing anyone to buy into my services and products.
For the Cost of Sleep: I have realized that I am a work in progress
For the Cost of Sleep: I am healing myself
For the Cost of Sleep: I have practiced what I preached and speak my truth
For the Cost of Sleep: I had to dismiss folks who weren’t adding any positivity, love, and value to my life which cost me sleep and peace.
For the Cost of Sleep: I realize that sometimes it's okay to not be okay and process those emotions
For the Cost of Sleep: I am a God and God will always have my back. *Thanks, David Banner for #TheGodBox*
For the Cost of Sleep: I have to curb my perfectionism and procrastination because it blocks me from being the best version of myself.
For the Cost of Sleep: I had to reread this list, add to it, edit it, and just go with it LOL.

Coaching Question: For the cost of sleep, what have you sacrificed, gave up, or decided to embrace?

Millennials: The Young, Fly, Flashy and Often Misunderstood Generation

Millennials are the largest and most technological savvy generation born between the ages of 1980-2000. Millennials or Gen Yers have surpasses the Baby Boomers generation as the largest population. Millennials are 95 million deep while the Baby Boomers are 78 million deep. Within the past year, I just realized that I was apart of this interesting and unique generation due to being interviewed as a top Millennial within my community (wow). So, I've decided to write about being a Millennial and represent my Clique to the fullest.

As a Millennial, I consider myself a young, fly, flash, tech savvy and innovative businesswoman who doesn't like rigidity and inflexibility within my life. A while back in graduate school circa 2007-2009, I knew that I wasn't equipped and rigid to work a 9-5 and remain on a job for 30 plus years with receiving a watch or plaque for my loyalty to a particular agency, organization or for profit like my parents received. No disrespect to my parents because they are living a fruitful life of retirement and they are happy, healthy and doing their thing as retirees. My parents are Baby Boomers who actually birth two Generations Xers (my brothers) and my the Millennials. I always felt that my brothers were born in an amazing generation due to the culture of the world, the birth of Hip Hop, the upswing of the economy and being reared by younger parents. I had to wrong because I realized that I had best of both worlds because I was able to indulge in the Gen Xers culture while figuring out which generation I belong to.

Beginning of the Millennial Generation
I like to consider my generation as the birth of modernized technology, ADHD society and the birth of innovation. I remember being in elementary school at The James J. Chittick in Hyde Park, MA and being introduced to children who were deemed "hyper" and "behavioral"who were unable to pay attention in class while the teacher were providing the lesson of the day. I also remember these same kids being labeled as bad children who had to sit in the corner for fidgeting in their chairs, not paying attention to the teacher or acting out. As a 32 year old woman, I looked back at some of my former classmates and realized how bored out their mind these children were and how the teacher was able to detect these behaviors and figure out another plan for the class. Also, back when I was in elementary school we had this wonderful thing called recess in which we were able to go outside or stay inside to play and get all that extracurricular activity out our system without driving the teacher out of the education profession. I also remember coming back in from recess and having the ability to stay on task with schoolwork. What a difference between than and now.

Within my generation, I remember being introduced to MacIntosh computers aka Apple and the Oregon Trail. The Oregon Trail is the godparent to modern electronic games such as Tetris, Candy Crush and other addictive games. In order to play The Oregon Trail, you had to be on your best behavior during computer time with Ms. Fulton-Brown (my computer teacher at The Chittick) In computer class, we were able to learn how to type on the computer by using a word processing software and it was not a word document software. It was interesting teaching my family about computers because they didn't have a clue about using a computer because it was a foreign object in most homes back in the 80s. We had a word-processor which was a bulky computer like machine to type out documents like a typewriter but it had a computer screen attached so you can see what you were typing.

I can go on and on about the beginning of the Millennial Generation but I am going to stick with the basics and what make a Millennial thrive within their personal and professionally life. Majority of the time, we are often looked down upon because we are the most educated, underemployed, diverse, and misunderstood generation of our time. I am going to breakdown some of these myths below from a Millennial point of view.

The majority of the time, we are often looked down upon because we are the most educated, underemployed, diverse, and misunderstood generation of our time. I am going to break down some of these myths below from a Millennial point of view.

Let us Millennials Live!

Millennials usually get a bad rep for being called entitled, narcissist, spoiled, disloyal, lazy, unstable and free spirited individuals. Give Millennials a chance to prove how witty, educated, innovated and flexible we are.

1. Millennials thrive of flexibility. As a mentioned above, I knew I was no equipped to work on anyone's job from 9-5pm. Most agencies, corporations, and organizations are rigid when it comes to work hours, sick time and paid time off. Millennials thrive on flexibility, telecommunication, location independence and freedom to create their own work hours and space. We can get the job done, whether it is in the office or at home, but we need more independence and freedom to be creative, be us and get the job done. Hence, why we love technology because we can work from the beach by having our MacBook, iPhone 5/6 and positive vibes to get the job done.

2. Millennials aren't lazy, we are quick and ongoing learners. Millennials usually are not committed to jobs long term due to being able to grasp the job duties and responsibilities at an accelerated rate. We are not lazy in performing our job duties and responsibilities, we are bored out our minds doing the daily mundane things. We need to challenge, creative outlet, and input and voice to share with others. Many times, we feel shunned and out the loop because we are often not included due to our youthfulness and inexperience.

3. Millennials like to travel and explore. As a Millennial, I lived in a few states for school and work. I often get the side-eyed from potential employers because I lived in five states, studied abroad, held numerous of jobs and job titles and live life to the fullest. Many employers will try to penalize you because you are living a fruitful life and don't understand why you can't commit to a job, location, home or someone else. We love to live life to the fullest, boldly, and loudly, but sometimes get discriminated against because some individuals are either fearful to live their life to the fullest by experiencing the abundance that life has to offer. Millennials stay unbothered, unashamed and unapologetic for living life to the fullest.

4. Millennial are overeducated and underemployed. While watching the State of the Union last night, President Obama mission is to strengthen the middle class and increase higher paying jobs to the economy. I have to cosign with him because as a Millennial, I know I am worth more and I have the two degrees to prove it. Many Millennials are working two and a half or three jobs just trying to survive never mind thrive The struggle is not real because we were created to thrive, but how can you thrive when you are overeducated, underemployed with a high ass student loan hanging over your head? I will wait for the answer because Auntie Sallie Mae is waiting for her money on payday and have no problem harassing you for it.

5. Millennials are waiting longer for things such as... Having children and getting married are listed last on the list for Millennials. We are getting married later in life due to being committed to our careers, businesses, travel and making us. Millennials are often waiting to have children because they are financially insecure, selfish or don't have the time to parent children. Plus, childcare is extremely expensive, parenting is stressful and it does put a yield to fulfilling other dreams and obligations. I was reading an article on the Pew Research website that the more education a woman requires, the longer she is going to wait to start a family and that's ok. Like I have mentioned in my previous blog article, it is no one's business to ask anyone when are they going to start a family.

6. Millennials are less likely to practice organized religion. Many Millennials especially African Americans are fleeing from churches and tuning into spirituality versus religion. Many Millennials are skeptical about organized religious institutions. I am sure many Millennials have their own reasons on why they are distrustful of religious institutions.

7. Millennials love and swear by technology. I absolutely love technology and appreciate the evolution of technology made since the early 80s. I remember AOL dial-up internet services, you couldn't use the phone while being on the internet. Now, you can be on the phone, your cell phone, listen to music and etc. I remember having my own line in my room, having a pager and a two-way pager, not using your cell phone until after 9 pm due to "free" minutes and texting was non-existence. Nowadays, we have data plans, can send pictures, text messages, music via Bluetooth and other outlets. We can Skype or Facetime our love ones who live out of state. I love how both of my Baby Boomer parents are able to text and use technology better than my Gen X brother lol.

You can receive all kinds of information at the touch of your phone or tablet. I love technology because it is powerful and resourceful. You can move mountains via social media, start movements and jump start your career. I just haven't jumped on the Instagram bandwagon just yet and probably will not because my time is limited to building my Empire.

I hope you all enjoyed reading about Millennials and how we are often the misunderstood generation. Remember, we are a part of the ADHD society, ushered in the technology era, love freedom and independence and love to embrace other walks of life.

Are you a Millennial? If so, what other myths have you heard about being a Millennial? If you are from a different generation, how can you help bridge the generational gap?

Thank you for reading Brown Girl From Boston blog post. We love and appreciate your constant support.

XOXO,
Drea
