#SelfCare: Unfriend, Unfollow, and Get Unstuck!

Now I am not for the braggadocious, "I am going to unfollow and unfriend folks on my page. If you are reading this, you are safe." <---------brown do="" don="" girl="" p="" please="" t="" this="" tribe="">
I can't stand when folks make this attention-seeking announcement as if people are going to write their wrongs, correct certain behaviors to not get that unfriend/unfollowed button push when it comes to their page. You don't need to make an announcement because at the end of the day: 1. No one cares, 2. You look foolish, and 3. We all need to unfriend/unfollow people healthily and maturely. *Just go ahead and unfriend folks, drink your water and keep it moving because it is not that serious.*
If you are unsure and stuck on who you should unfriend/unfollow, check out some tips below.
1. The Toxic/Abusive/Racist/Hatred/Any Suspicious Folks need to be unfriended immediately. They showed you their true colors often; you constantly want to engage in negative behavior such as arguing, losing your cool, or constantly wanting to educate an ignorant person and refuse to change their ways. Even close family members, colleagues, friends, associates, and etc., can and should be unfriended if such behaviors are exhibited.
2. The "I'm Living My Best Life/I Don't Catch Feelings, I Catch Flights, Folks"! Chile, just because you catch flights, you need to catch feelings because maybe you are numb and need to work on releasing and coping with some inner trauma. We all have feelings. These folks usually brag about every little detail of their lives and try to make their fellow "followers"/"friends" feel awful about their not so glitzy and glamorous life. If you ever feel small, less than, self-doubt, or downplay your life, please unfriend these folks and start reaffirming how amazing you are. We don't know how folks are attaining these "lifestyles," It is also social media, and you recreate and fabricate who you are and what you do. *Sorry Not Sorry* People lie every day, B!
3. The "Randoms" and Network Opportunist: These folks are hella random, mainly users and have no reciprocal intentions for your "networking" relationship. These folks usually have a mutual friend or met at a conference that you may speak at. They friend you but only hit you up when an opportunity is involved for them. They suck you dry, name drop your name to get opportunities without building a rapport with you, and only slide in the DM to benefit them. Go ahead and unfriend/unfollow them immediately because these kinds of folks leave you resentful and bitter because they are habitual line steppers and boundary-pushers.
4. The "Get Ghost because I didn't like what you said or did, former BFF/friend/ex-significant other": I have a major issue with immature cowards who go ghost when times get hard, a disagreement occurred, or you kept said individual accountable. This person is playing a dangerous holistic, wellness damaging game. They don't need any further access to you because they got ghosts on you, stopped talking to you in real life but constantly want to keep tabs on what you're doing. Nah, son, you don't need to see what I am doing because you are not worthy and mature enough to confront the unknown issue at hand. They got a ghost, and you constantly beat yourself up because you are trying to out what you said or did for them to go ghost. Please show them the door once all communication is exhausted and ceased. Ghosting is debilitating, damaging your self-esteem and psyche, especially when you tried to figure out and even reach out to the said individual who went ghost on you. Don't go ghost, have a conversation, and mutual release the relationship, if applicable. If you have been ghosted, you just need to release that person and move forward in your life. Protect yourself and flyness.

The 3 Ways Brown Girls Block Love In Their Lives

As human beings, we all need security, love, and social belonging. We all want to belong and receive love from others but at the same time, we should want healthy, fulfilling, and satisfying love. It's saddening to see we as women depriving ourselves of this much-needed love. Why do we do this? How do we do this? Reasons as to why may vary from woman to woman. But when it comes to how, here are 3 ways in which we block love in our lives.

1.The Superwoman Syndrome

As women, we are faced with many responsibilities such as being a wife, sister, friend, daughter, aunt, colleague, coach, mom, organizer, counselor, President of an organization(s), entrepreneur, the go-to girl, the go get it girl, the do-er and whatever else. As women, we take on a lot of people's stuff without blinking and eye. We don't realize how these things affect us, we internalize and suppress people's stuff and our stuff and eventually self-destruct. We don't do a great job with setting limitations and boundaries with others. We also don't do a great job with putting ourselves first on our "to do list"  Hence, this is why we suffer from burn out because we don't take the time to love ourselves first. In order, to help others, serve others and encourage others, we must do these things to take care of ourselves first.

Many women feel guilty when loving and putting themselves first. We are here to tell you that if you don't take the time to care for yourself, you will be taken advantage of, become resentful and become bitter. Self-care is a must! You are doing yourself a service when you care for yourself. Celebrate yourself by loving yourself and appreciating all your greatness.

Check out a simple and convenient way to start your self-care routine at www.selfcareforbrowngirls.com

2. The Love Don't Live Here Mindset

In an Essence Magazine article, it was reported that 900,000 African American women EACH YEAR are getting cosmetic surgery while the number of  Caucasian women have slightly declined. Lately, cosmetic surgery is increasing among sistahs, take for example Vivica A. Fox and Lil' Kim. Lil' Kim underwent cosmetic surgery because she said that she wanted to be the "Black Barbie". More and more African American celebrities are getting things nipped and tucked. Now for the women who idolize these celebrities, they tend to want to follow suit.

One of the women interviewed in the article, a 40-year-old professional, stated she spends $500 a month to get hydrogel injected into her backside in order to look like the "voluptuous video vixens" as seen in King Magazine. The 40-year-old professional confessed that she is tired of coming home to an empty house and wants to keep a man interested in her because she is tired of the twenty-somethings "taking all the men.”

Another young lady in her mid-twenties was interviewed and discussed how she enrolled in an oral sex class at a local adult shop due to her "lack of experience and knowledge" about oral sex. She further explained how her current boyfriend, "inspired" her to do so. This young lady's," oh so loving" boyfriend, told her that her "head game" was weak and she needed a crash course on oral sex in order for them to continue their relationship. When I read this I thought, he better be an oral sex champion his damn self and if so why wasn't he sexually empowering her and strengthening their intimacy through exploration and communication. That’s another article in itself. Imagine the deep emotional bruising that was caused to her self-worth and self-esteem.  She agreed and enrolled in the class to upgrade her "head game".

When we have not received appropriate behaviors to model such as healthy love, a sense of belonging, and attachment; we latch onto unhealthy behaviors and people. When you are lacking confidence and self-esteem it is virtually impossible to expect anyone else to treat you with a sense of dignity and respect. Like my girl Lauryn Hill said, " How are you gonna win when you ain't right within? "

3. The Sistah Shade Room

Let's discuss dysfunctional sisterhood shall we? Sometimes I wonder did our mamas and aunties and them have as much drama as we see on Love and Hip Hop or the Real Housewives? I feel like in this current generation, the level of female drama is at an all-time high and it is lethal. I believe that when we open our subconscious mind to these images we see on "reality TV " we begin to believe it is ok to treat our friends and sisters this way too. The gossip, the back biting, the cat fighting is so toxic that it will naturally block anything good from showing up in your life, let alone the love you want and need.
When a sister-friend is constantly negative, stuck in life, doesn't communicate and doesn't respect the circle of sisterhood, they no longer serve your purpose. You must build up the courage to release that friendship with love. Releasing these relationships lovingly is so important because you are allowing yourself to let go of any resentment and bitterness that will keep you jammed up internally.

There are divine laws that govern our  lives whether we know it or not.  One, in particular, is The Universal Law of Attraction. The Law of Attraction  states that like energy attracts like energy. So think about it. What type of reality will you attract when you don't love yourself and are tied up in toxic relationships?

Own Your FLYness

"I do not trust people who don't love themselves and yet tell me, I love you. There is an African saying which is: Be careful when a naked person offers you a shirt." -Maya Angelou

Ever since I can remember, my mom, instilling self-esteem, self-love, and self-perseverance into my life. From birth to infancy to a married adult woman, my mom always let me know how intelligent, beautiful, independent, bold, FLY, revolutionary, unapologetic, positive, business savvy, stylish, and a survivalist. These values I hold dear to my heart because being a Brown Girl From Boston and surviving a cold world.

With the help of my mother, I knew that I had to be a FLY (Fearlessly Loving Yourself) in a world that insists that women especially women of color to love everyone before themselves. When you fearlessly love yourself, you are liberating yourself from unrealistic standards, unhealthy patterns, pathology, mindset and breaking the cycle of self-abuse.

Yes, when you don't love yourself that is displaying self-harming, self-abuse and self-sabotaging behavior. When you don't love yourself it is challenging to accept yourself and challenging to accept others wholeheartedly. You CANNOT love and accept others until you love, accept and own your FLYness. When you own your FLYness, you are free, fearless, fierce and accepting.

No one can give you that feeling. Not a romantic partner, a baby, shopping spree nor traveling around the world. When you own your FLYness, be aware and prepared to have people, especially family members and "friends" to persuade you to stop thinking so highly of yourself. People are uncomfortable with growth and change. People want to keep you comfortable because they are comfortable right where you currently are. When you grow, people lose their everlasting mind and here come the hate, discouragement, and negative energy.

Baby Boo, do you and own your FLYness!

Baby Boo, let's get you on the path of owning and finding your FLYness!

Honor Your FLYness: FLYness comes from within! We all are born with FLYness but either we did not see a great example of self-love or we weren't taught that it comes from within or we were misinformed that FLYness comes from our looks, body, and how many wo(men) chase after us. FLYness is using your power, your voice, your goodness to do amazing inner work and radiate love. When you discover your FLYness, honor it, cultivate it and protect it! It's yours. FLYness comes from your soul.

Show up and show out! In my Chris Tucker voice *Don't ever, ever, ever shrink, dismissed nor minimize your FLYness! FLYness is your birthright! If you can't love you, you can't love anyone else! When you walk into the room, SHINE! Your outfit is cute but are you truly showing up and showing out for yourself. Are you radiating your light? Are you radiating love?

Protect and Accept Your FLYness: My favorite quote/mantra is God is within her, s(he) will not fail! You are a Goddess because God is within you. When God is within you, you have no choice but to protect and accept your FLYness. Stop apologizing for taking care and loving yourself! You are supposed to be FLY. FLYness is essential to surviving. When you are FLY, you are protecting yourself from the games, citizenship, abuse, neglect and other negative energy! When you neglect your FLYness, you become preyed on by abusers, users, and emotional vampires who are waiting to attack and prey on your FLYness! Protect your FLYness!

My challenge to you is to find, accept and own your FLYness! Don't ever allow anyone to tell you not to love yourself. Don't ever allow anyone to tell you that you are being selfish because you are loving yourself first! Remember FLYness is essential for survival!

Repeat after me: I deserve to fearlessly love myself before I can love anyone else. FLYness is my birthright!

Thank you for reading and supporting Brown Girl From Boston!

National Women's Health Week: African American Women Health Matter

"If you a fly gal, get your hair done, get a pedicure, your nails did and get your annual check-up." -Missy ft Drea, Work It Remixed by Brown Girl From Boston *I have added the annual checkup piece*

Brown Girls, we are some beautiful, stylish, and creative beings. Conversely, we are also stressed, vastly aging within, and unhealthy beings. When I see my Brown Girls, stylin' on them in the streets and on social media, I make sure I give my proper respect, but I want us to acknowledge that our inner FLYness is going unnoticed. FLY (Fearlessly Loving Yourself) self-care starts from within, and many of us are ignoring warning signs and symptoms of chronic burnout, emotional stress, and unhealthy lifestyles. Yes, you are rocking a fly a** outfit with your fly a** hair, but what about your holistic health. Does your inner FLYness match your outer FLYness?

Did you know this is National Women's Checkup Week (May 10-16, 2015)? If you don't know, you know, FLY Brown Girl. Let me ask you this uncensored and honest question: When was the last time you received a holistic annual checkup from your medical team? Your medical team should consist of a trusted Primary Care Physician (PCP),  Gynecologist, Dentist, Psychologist/Clinical Therapist/Counselor, and any other medical specialty you might seek medical advice? If you are staring at this screen thinking for more than five minutes, you have answered your own question. If you can't think of the last time you received a holistic annual check-up, NOW is the time to make that appointment. Don't be scared!! Preventive care is necessary, and it will save your life.

Drea's Journey to Inner FLYness

My entire life, I have always been athletic, active, and in shape until the last five years of my life. In the previous five years of my life, I have dealt with a divorce, state-to-state relocation, unemployment, chronic work stress, starting a business, getting remarried, and all cray grayness. When life happens, you often try to find a way to survive the best you can. When those survival skills are no longer adaptable to you and your situation, you must find another way to survive and thrive.

I have always fluctuated from 125 pounds to 140 pounds, depending on what was going on in my life. For the last three years, my weight gain has been out of control, and that's when I knew something was off. Not only was my weight gain out of control, but I was unable to drop weight despite working out five times a week with a personal trainer. Little did I know that I was battling an invisible but evident autoimmune disease called Hypothyroidism (when your thyroid is barely producing hormones). For the past three years, I have discovered a gradual shift within myself, such as unexplained weight gain, hair loss, fatigue, terrible acne that turns to black spots, mood change, constipation, foggy memory, restlessness, sensitivity to the cold, and the list continues. I have chopped up my symptoms to constant lifestyle change, marriage weight, and turning 30.

Every day, I struggled to get out of bed to do basic daily living activities. I couldn't focus on one training and just couldn't turn my mind off and sleep. I depended on numerous cups of coffee to keep me going throughout the day, and I was wired and eventually crashed every weekend. My primary wake-up call happened when my husband and I went out one night, and I had a meltdown over choosing a movie and what to eat for dinner. That one meltdown turned into weekly breakdowns over the smallest and simplest things. The scary moment happened when I wanted to give up on life and exist. That's when I went to seek professional medical help and researched my symptoms.

At the time, I switched my PCP and gynecologist to an all-women medical practice in Providence. I thought I was going to receive the best quality of medical attention and have all my issues resolved with a diagnosis. WRONG! First, I told my gynecologist my concerns, symptoms, and medical red flags. She did not appear to be concerned and chopped it up to lifestyle changes and birth control. She ordered one blood test, lit up with me, and said nothing was wrong. I kept explaining that something was off because I lived in my body daily. My complaints fell on deaf ears, and she quickly got fired due to her lack of respect, integrity, and bedside manner. I felt that she was just trying to get to the root of the issues and basically dismissed me.

Secondly, I took my list of red flags, symptoms, and worries to my Primary Care Physician, specializing in Women's Health Issues. During my visit, my PCP ordered me to receive some blood tests and to follow up with her in two weeks. The follow-up visit was useless because she stated that my thyroid was borderline abnormal and not to worry. Excuse me if it is borderline strange, but shouldn't you still treat it with some kind of medication or alternative solutions? She told me not to worry and schedule my next yearly checkup. No, ma'am, you are fired because you dismissed me and provided me with over-the-counter stool softer and Miralax to solve my chronic constipation issues. She also stated that my 40-pound weight gain was attributed to stress and nutrition even though I put myself on a gluten-free diet and consumed 1200-1500 calorie intake, working out five times a week, and the scale is steadily moving on. I was just sick and tired of receiving subpar medical care.

As much as I wanted to give up on myself and my health, I continued to seek a quality medical professional. It took me two years, but I found a naturopathic physician who actively listened to my health concerns and assessed my holistic care. During my first visit, my physician sat there with a pen and paper and openly listened to my medical history, current medical state, and frustrations. My PCP ordered sixteen blood tests to test everything from autoimmune diseases to food allergies. I had to follow up with him within two weeks, and I did. The two weeks felt like two months because I wanted to know the results immediately.

Fast forward to May 12, 2015, my questions were finally answered through quality care, advocacy, and my PCP being compassionate about my holistic health. My PCP sat me down in his office and explained every single medical issue that I was silently but vocally dealing with. Not only was I diagnosed with Hypothyroidism, but I am also suffering from a hormonal imbalance. I knew something was off because I know my body, and when something is off. The medical professionals can only test and confirm you, but you have to tap into your intuition and listen to your body.

I knew I wasn't going crazy. I couldn't give up on advocating on my own behalf because I am all I have. I am on the road to holistic healing because I did not give up. I started going to a holistic therapist who focuses on African-American professionals who struggle with being present and mindful and helps unleash suppressed feelings and emotions. When you are an unapologetic FLY girl, you don't give up on yourself.

How Brown Girls Can Advocate for Self

African-American women put everyone's holistic needs before their own. We have been programmed to put everyone's needs before our own needs, but we are the main ones suffering in silence and in isolation. We are often afraid of being vulnerable, worried that we will be deemed weak because we ask for help. We love wearing that damn cape and mask and embracing the "Strong Black Woman" persona, but behind the cloak and cover is a broken, unhealthy woman who is crying out for help. Being vulnerable and asking for help are two undeniable strengths to possess, embrace, and celebrate. We need to break together and start advocating for our holistic needs so we can begin our journey to healing.

Historically, African Americans have a mistrustful trust relationship when it comes to seeking professional medical advice. Hence, we are less likely to receive preventive care. When we do decide to seek preventive care, it is often too late, and the disease/cancer has manifested and spread throughout our bodies.

From a cultural standpoint, we have been guinea pigs, receive subservient care, face barriers regarding quality health care within our neighborhoods, and need more knowledge about tests and screenings to screen out major health issues. Advocacy gives you the power to educate yourself and keep you aware of what is happening inside you.

I have recently traveled to the DMV area (Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia) to attend the National Breast Cancer Coalition Conference. There is an important initiative that the NBCC is pushing that is called Deadline 2020. Deadline 2020 is an initiative to eliminate breast cancer through vaccines like Gardasil to prevent Ovarian Cancer. I hope this vaccine will help stop breast cancer because African American women are being diagnosed and dying from breast cancer than any other racial group.

Traveling to the conference gave me the voice to advocate for all major health issues to advocate for African American preventive care. We have the power, voice, and numbers to lobby for quality of care within our community, city level, state level, and national level. We must sit at the table with the medical professionals and advocate for quality of care clinics, hospitals, affordable medical insurance, major health screenings and testing, and knowledge of medical terms in our language for our understanding. Many times, when the doctor explains things in medical terminology, many of us need clarification about what is being stated. You, as the patient, have the right to advocate and ask questions about what is being said and done to your body.

Many patients need to realize that we have rights and responsibilities. You have the right to access quality of care. You have the right to see your medical records. You have the right to hire and fire any doctor that you don't agree with or feel uncomfortable with. You are responsible for using your voice and advocate. You are responsible for paying your medical bill.  The list goes on! (Here is a copy of the Patient's Bill of Rights)

Remember, you belong at the table advocating for YOUR health! Don't allow your symptoms and warning signs to go unheard. Find someone willing to listen to your list of concerns and actively help you find answers. You are a precious being, and you deserve to live a healthy and happy life.

Black women matter, our health matters, and we count. #womenlives

Invest in Yourself....Yes, You Can Afford It

"Invest in yourself and people will invest in you." -Andrea C. Imafidon

How many times have you denied yourself of something you need such as a financial coach, mentor, or investment in your business? How many times you said you cannot afford something but your splurge your money and time on mindless shopping, going out to eat, switching hairdos weekly and other things that don't serve your purpose? I am all for looking beautiful but don't you think it is time for you invest in your inner beauty and essence to match the outside?

We all have done this once upon a time because we either feel guilty or ashamed into investing in ourselves. Many times, we will invest in frivolous things such as a new outfit, shoes, expensive handbag or something tangible that doesn't provide substances within our lives.  How many times do you "reward" yourself with an expensive gift but still feel guilty or empty within? (Coaching Question)

When you invest in yourself, you are proving yourself with an unlimited wealthy of opportunities. Investing in yourself is a part of self-love and self-care which are two valuable personal experiences that are organic and natural. When you denied yourself of investing in yourself, it will show within your personal and professional life. When you don't invest within yourself, you suppress your inner passion, interests and growth/evolution. How can we be truly free and independent when we don't provide investment and self-love for ourselves? You will always be caught up in the rapture of brokenness and chasing after a deferred dream when we don't invest in ourselves.

Remember, investing in yourself take patience, persistence, prayer, and payment. Yes payment. You are going to pay one way or another, you are going to pay money to attend that long over due workshop, conference, or class to help you achieve your lifelong goal. You are going to have to dig a little deeper in the closet and shop for that cute outfit to wear for that investment meeting with the big investors who are looking to invest thousands into your company. You are going to stop asking your fellow sister-friend for the "hook up" because that sister-friend is worth more than asking for the hook up. She invest in her business, have home and business bills to pay and she is worth it.

Now is the time to invest in yourself and building your empire! Don't defer your dreams and goals for something else.

Here are three ways why you should invest in yourself:
  1. Pursuing your passion.  Time is one of the most important things you should invest in when you are pursuing your passion. You cannot get time back. When your pursue your passion, you are providing self-love and perseverance. Your passion is within and at your fingertips but you must discover it. Discovering your passion, being persistence and investing in yourself are valuable tools. When you invest in yourself, you have to be willing to make sacrifices such as cutting back from getting a manicure and pedicure weekly, you have to go shopping within your closet and at times you have to minimize your lifestyle. (Some of you all are probably rolling your eyes but you have to sacrifice something to achieve your dreams.)
  2. Creating and Increasing Your Wealth. When people think of wealth, people think of finances. Wealth is not always about finances. The definition of wealth have a plethora of meanings but for this article we will stick with abundance of anything. We should invest in our wealth of knowledge, resources and wisdom. When we increase our wealth, we should also invest our wealth in others who have the wisdom, knowledge and experience in a certain field or business. We should invest in books, workshops, a coach, our community and organization to increase your net-worth, network, and self-worth
  3. Holistic Self-Care. “The most powerful relationship you will ever have is the relationship with yourself.” – Steve Maraboli Great quote! If you don't love yourself, don't expect anyone else to love or invest in you. We live in an ADHD and microwaveable society in which we are constantly on the go. Stop, breathe and connect with yourself. Invest in healthy and unprocessed foods which we save you money and sickness. Invest in your health by working out. You don't have to invest in an expensive gym membership in which you may never use but one time. Go put on some shorts/sweatpants and sneakers and work it out. Turn off the TV and sit in your thoughts. Be still, meditate and listen to that voice within called intuition. All these things cost you nothing but time and effort.
Providing self-care and self-awareness doesn't cost you nothing but time and effort. You must be willing to invest into you, your dreams, your wealth and health. You deserve to love yourself and care for yourself. Stop investing your wealth into tangible and material things which will slowly fade away. Invest into things that matter which is you and your well-being. If you cannot invest and give to yourself, there is no way you will be able to give whole-heartedly to others. Invest in yourself.

Invest wisely!
