So Today, I Cried Instead of Crashing Out

So, today I cried instead of crashing out.
Instead of Jesus wept, I wept
                                                       at the most inopportune moment.

I tried to hold it in.
You’re not supposed to cry on camera,
not in front of your supervisor.
But I didn’t care.

I needed to weep.
To be seen as human.
To let go of the perfectionist mask.

I wept for those who can’t.
For those who struggle to express
misplaced emotions and buried feelings.
I wept for past experiences
that left me broken and bleeding in silence.

I wept into my mother’s arms—
because the pain was too much
to hold on my own.

So, I wept.

Will I do it again?
I’m afraid so.
But weeping…There
was a feeling of sweet sorrow.

In that moment of vulnerability,
I didn’t apologize.
I took a deep breath and said:
“I don’t belong here.”
My purpose and plan are
beyond this place.

Those words came from a place of
discernment,
self-awareness,
and discovery.

I’m thankful for the space I was in—
safe enough to break down
and still stand up again.

Yes, I wept.
With embarrassment.
And empowerment.

Because this isn’t my final resting place.
This is just a stop along the journey.
And I know—I know—
I’m rising to the top.

Author’s Note
I wrote this poem on a difficult day, one that reminded me of the power of my creativity when it flows freely. I hadn’t written poetry in a while, but the heaviness cracked something open. It reminded me that my best work doesn’t come from being micromanaged, criticized, or governed. It comes from my truth. From my soul. There’s a part of me I’ve suppressed for too long, and it’s time to let her rise, unapologetically.

Being A Strong Black Woman Is Not My Calling

I woke up and decided being a Strong Black Woman was not my calling. Being a Strong Black Woman is not my ministry. I cannot and will no longer kill myself for the sake of keeping my career, keeping the peace, or settling for nonsense. I would rather avoid situations and environments where I must stay strong.

I woke up and received a download from the Most High to write a quick blog post about being A Strong Black Woman and how I have suffered in silence while taking on unnecessary stress, nonsense, and toxic treatment from myself and others. I am unashamed to state that I brought into the narrative of being a Strong Black Woman and how to be unbothered and stoicism about things that do bother me, hinder me, and keep me stuck in this unhealed, traumatic, and perpetuated lie we have inherited from our ancestors, our Mothers, and other Black Women and often time society. Before getting into my story about being strong, I have to say this: being a Strong Black Woman is detrimental to our mental health, physical health, and spiritual health.

It affects our mental health: It affects Black Women's mental health because we suffer in silence and internalize toxic messaging, wear a mask, can't be sensitive, and constantly suppress who we are. We have to put our needs on the back burner and become a martyr to be strong and stoic.

It affects Black Women's physical health because when we internalize the messaging of being strong and not letting your hair down, we are stoicism and unbothered while we are suffering from high blood pressure, rising levels of cortisol, emotional eating, insomnia, underlying health issues such as an autoimmune disorder, fibroids, and more. Many Black Women are taught to be caregivers, prove their worth, and neglect themselves for the sake of pushing through and being strong because you cannot allow others to see you sweat while your mental and physical health is declining.

It affects our spiritual health; faith and prayer are sometimes all we have. Still, even that is affected because you question the Most High on your internalized struggle: why are you dealing with difficult situations, people, and toxic environments. You become hopeless and helpless because you feel the highest abandon you, and your faith wavers.

I have decided to break up with being strong because I am exhausted. I am tired of fronting and adopting the ideology of others because that doesn't work for me. One of my managers told me I needed to be strong and toughen up because the "students" would take advantage of me. I needed to rule with an iron fist. No, ma'am, that's not me. Plus, you get more with honey than you do with it. I will not subscribe to being a Strong Black Woman to appease other aggressive, harmful, and toxic Black Women. I refuse to prove my toughness because I come from a long line of Strong Black Women, but on the low, they were resilient; no doubt, they also died at young ages due to stoicism, aggressive stress, toxic environments, and caring for the needs of others while neglecting themselves. I am trading in strong for being soft, sensitive, and sensible. Sometimes, due to the environments and people I was surrounded by, I had to adapt to the Timberland Boot energy, aka being strong, independent, and fiery, but that was exhausting. When I am in survival mode or want to be heard and seen, I revert back to that energy. Still, it doesn't serve me and takes a significant hit on my mental health, physical health, and spiritual health because I was masking my true self instead of walking and living my truth. I have been told that you will have to deal with something and stop crying because people will take advantage of your "weakness" instead of, wow, you are empathetic. Let's cultivate that skill, which is a strength.

Benton Nissan

I want to debut my first commercial with the Brown Girl Tribe!
I’m excited that I was at least in three shots. S/O to my husband on the commercial, Kenzie, for giving me pointers from acting classes. This isn’t my first rodeo on being on television. I am excited that I was able to have my confidence build up enough to even submit my headshot and portfolio after being diagnosed with hypothyroidism and fibroids which altered my outer looks but didn’t hinder my inner FLYness.
Sometimes, you have to make bold moves to step into your purpose and life Assignment. I’m not saying being an actress is my life Assignment but I’m saying what is for you is for you despite how you may see yourself. While you may temporarily see “ugliness” someone may see beauty and gracefulness.
Keep chasing purpose not paper. Keep cultivating your inner FLYness and beauty. You never know who you are inspiring!

Ask, Believe and Achieve: Be Bold, Be Fearless and Believe!

It was the December 13, 2013 when I made the leap of faith to leave my abusive, dead end and damaging job as a Director of Social Services at an international nonprofit. I was broken, beatdown and betrayed by a job I used to love. I have experienced ageism, racism and any kind of ism that I was able to experience. I gained weight, lost sleep, had night tremors and became temporary cray cray due to working in an abusive, toxic and unhappy environment. I have suffered in silence and took it out on the ones I love.

One day, I was on a free teleclass that changed my life for the better. I was sitting on this conference call desperately ready to change my life by any means necessary. I have reached my rock bottom as a professional woman who have reached the pinnacle of her career. I was 30 years and I was a Director of a nonprofit agency. Mama, I have made it!!! I looked amazing on paper but I was a Hot A$% Mess in reality.

It was meant for me to be on this call because I officially but unofficially found out about life coaching through the amazing Valorie Burton. She shared of story on how she moved passed a divorce, depression and desperation. I was silently on the other end saying 'Yass" because I have been divorced, depressed and desperate for a miracle. I remember saying how I was over being a social worker because I have been there and done that and haven't felt as if I made a big enough impact on the world. I knew I couldn't save the world but I realize that I haven't even saved myself. Yikes!

As Valorie Burton kept describing what she does, I kept envisioning myself speaking, teaching, coaching and writing. I just didn't know where to start when it came to coaching, finding clients nor speaking. I knew that I can put together empowering events for women because I have hosted numerous of natural hair events and empowering events for women. I put a check mark next to that. I knew that writing was a piece of cake because writing and blogging came easily to me. Check mark next to that. But I was stuck on this entire coaching piece even though coaching is closely to clinical social work. I have left that area blank. After Valorie Burton discussed her new book "Happy Women Live Better Lives" she proceed to say that she is hosted a Coaching Training Intensive in Reston, VA in May 2014. I screamed to the mountaintops or rather in the spare room and my husband ran in and asked what happened. I proceeded to tell him that I found my passion and purpose through coaching.

My husband asked me what did I need and I told him financial support and emotional support because I knew I was going to endure something while seeking my purpose. Well fast forward a month later at my abusive workplace. One day I fell ill and was on medical leave for a week from my job. My supervisor called me and disregarded my illness and thought I was faking. How can you fake an illness when your primary care physician put you on medication and medical leave. I have never felt so disgusted, undignified and worthless. Well that all change once I went back to work on December 13, 2013. Well that morning, I took the leap of faith and put down a deposit to attend CTI in Reston, VA. My husband called me to let me know that he have received a raise and promotion at his job. He said the magical words that any significant other can say...QUIT YOUR JOB! Chile, I hurried up and typed my letter of resignation, packed up my office and left the premises. I never felt so liberated in my life. I had to literally block my supervisor's number because she stalked me via phone.

When I achieved my certification in life coaching, I wasn't afraid of putting myself out there because I was once broken, considered a failure and confused. I said in order for me to obtain clients and help other women to be unapologetic and peaceful while pursuing their passion and purpose. I knew how it felt not having peace and I just wanted to help women find their peace and happiness within.

In conclusion, if I would have stayed at my former employer, I wouldn't be making a major impact in my life and the lives of others. I wouldn't be able to use my voice to share my story and help other women pursue their life passion and purpose in a peaceful and unapologetic way.  This past weekend, I used my voice in a powerful way and told my story to the women who needed to hear my story. Many of these women like myself suffered in silence until Sunday. Sunday during my workshop, I gave them permission to use their voice. I gave them permission to find their passion and purpose in a powerful and peaceful way. Many of us are not living in peace. Many of us gave our power away to negativity, toxicity and bullying. Today, I want you to know that you are powerful, valuable, beautiful and great enough!

Ask, Believe and Achieve all your hopes and dreams. Believe in yourself and your abilities. Take back your voice, beliefs, power and hope!

Much Peace, Love and Light!
XOXO,
Andrea

Featured Blog Post: A Survival Guide for the Unemployed Spouse

This blog post was featured on Black and Married With Kids ( http://blackandmarriedwithkids.com/2014/09/how-to-help-an-unemployed-spouse-not-give-up/)

Whether you relocated for love, got laid off, or got a pink slip, this article is just for you. At one point in my life, I was one of 9.8 million people who were unemployed and married. I took the risk of giving up my career, comfortable living, and a steady paycheck for love and marriage. In relationships, you take the risk to be with the one you love and have faith that they have your best interest at heart. Relocating to the state of Rhode Island where the unemployment rate is at an all-time high of 12% in the United States was a daunting experience but we made it through.
Tips for the Unemployed Spouse
  1. Don’t beat yourself up about being unemployed. Forgive, love, and care about yourself. It is so easy to focus on the negatives because the negatives are constantly staring us in the face.
  2. Take care of yourself physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Pray, eat healthily, give yourself positive self-talk, get 8 hours of sleep, exercise, and take life one day at a time. Avoid consuming alcohol, substance abuse, and negativity.
  3. Indulge in your passion; whether it is reading, writing, dancing, or running. All these things are great outlets to deal with the hurt, shame, or guilt of being unemployed. You have the time to act on it now.
  4. If you are interested in entrepreneurship, being unemployed is the best time to start your business. Whether you have a passion for event planning, organizing, and other innovative ideas; indulge in your passion. What do you have to lose by starting a business?
  5. Volunteering is a great way to perform an act of kindness by freely giving your time, effort, and talents for fulfilling duties in the community. Volunteering should be selfless, help build contacts, and help you gain rewarding experiences and blessings.
Tips for the Employed Spouse
  1. When your spouse loses their job, cheer them up by doing something special for him or her. Take them out for a night on the town and enjoy each other’s company. Distractions are key to show your support and love for your spouse. Make sure that you both live, love, and laugh!
  2. Check your emotions and feelings. Do not chastise your spouse about their unemployment. Do not put extra pressure on your spouse to go back and search for employment immediately. Your spouse is putting tremendous pressure on him/her self to find employment.
  3. Encourage your spouse during this adjustment period. Bring out the positive and unspoken skills, talents, and qualities your spouse possesses. For example, if your spouse is phenomenal at organizing, encourage your spouse to seek employment or start a small professional organizing business.
  4. Do not expect your spouse to become a domesticated housewife/husband, especially if they are used to being in the workforce. If your unemployed spouse did not cook breakfast, lunch, and dinner before being unemployed, why would you expect those services now? Your spouse is busy spending their time seeking employment, revamping resumes and cover letters.
  5. If you are an entrepreneur, encourage your spouse to start a business based on their special talents, skills, or strengths. You know what it takes to start a business so assist and encourage your spouse to do the same.
Being unemployed can lower your self-esteem and confidence level due to society defining us by our jobs and the ability to bring home a steady paycheck. Remember, being unemployed is temporary.

Quick Recap: The Pursuit of Passion and Purpose Group Coaching Workshop

On July 19, 2014, Brown Girl From Boston hosted it's very first group coaching workshop entitled, "The Pursuit of Passion and Purpose: How to rediscover your passion and purpose and create the life you love" in Providence, RI. It was a great intimate environment because I was able to provide laser coaching, affirm the participants, mindfully listen and personalize their intention.

We had participants from all walks of life, various personalities and professions but with a lot in common such as living out loud, maximizing their full potential, breaking free from limiting beliefs about their passion, purpose and self-doubt. We were able to celebrate one another's greatness in a safe and non-judgement zone.

We started the workshop with a cool ice breaker to set the intention of togetherness and inclusion because many times, when we attend workshops, we often want to stay in our comfort zone, receive the information and go home. I like to break the ice by having ice breaker because you never know the commonality of the people within the room. After the ice breaker, as a group we set ground rules. Ground rules are great to set within the group because that creates trust, rapport and help with the flow of the workshop. As a facilitator and coach, I like to have the group come up with rules because it is not about me, it is about the group and their comfort level of having the group flow.

Here is when we come into the the nitty gritty lol. The purpose of the workshop was to get out of our own way and rediscover the passion and purpose within. This part of the workshop, I thoroughly enjoyed because each participants got out of their own way, received affirmation and confirmation from others and was validated! As, I am typing this, I got chills and goosebumps because breakthroughs and aha moments did occur. When I heard everyone's story, I was just in awe because the strengths, talents, and gifts in one was overwhelming and I was in the midst of greatness. Just seeing everyone collaborate, share, respect one another and admire one another's courage to be in attendance was powerful.

You can live your ideal life! As you need to have is a vision and once you have a vision, you have to take the necessary steps to whether it is in the dark or light to accomplish your dreams and hopes. Having a positive support system is key to living your ideal life because we have a lot of naysayers who will try to distract, deflect and inflate your vision and dreams. You have to release them with love and love them from afar and replace them with people who are like-minded that will help you achieve and being actualization to your vision.

If you missed out on this workshop or live outside of the New England area, you have the opportunity to rediscover your passion and purpose with me on August 21. The workshop will take place online with others. Here is the link for the registration of the event.

For Brown Girls: Sisterhood is Powerful

"Show me your friends and I will show you what kind of person you are." -Annie Mae Dailey-Gulley/Josie Mae Gulley-Jacobs

Annie Mae (my grandmother) and Josie Mae (my mother) was not lying in regard to the quote above. You can tell a lot about a person, their character, and lifestyle by evaluating their friends. The people you spend time with are usually your biggest influencers and supporters whether it is a triumph or tragedy. Some of your "so-called" sister-friends are your biggest "Debbie Downers", "Nagging Nancy" or "Hannah the Hater". If you are not cautious these characteristics will rub off on you.

I decided to blog about sisterhood because I am discovering a reoccurring theme not only in my circle of sisterhood but in various circle of sisterhoods. Many sister-friends are often being taken advantage of, outgrowing their sister-friends and holding onto sisterhoods that no longer serve them purpose. If you find yourself in any of the unfortunate circumstances, don't panic, realize that you are not alone, and start doing the work and start healing.

We are going to discuss the dysfunctional sisterhood and healthy and functional sisterhood:

  1. Nonreciprocal Relationship/Creating a healthy friendship. Around this time last year, I found myself in an one sided association with someone who wasn't interested in being apart of my sisterhood. I listened and trusted my intuition and ran to the nearest exit. Unfortunately, you have people who are only out for self. They usually can sniff out someone who is giving and vulnerable. When establishing new sister-friends, listen to your intuition, associate with those who are calling you higher and maximize your potential, and create a healthy boundary with you and your new found sister-friend.
  2. When To Let Go/Freely and Lovingly Set Your Former Sister-Friend Free. In an ideal world, we would love to have everyone in our life to mature, evolve, and grow every step of the way. In reality, life doesn't work that way and we have to respect that sister-friend's life journey. When you discover that you and a sister-friend aren't in sync or friendship is stuck, that's when you have to reevaluate, be transparent and have an open conversation about your sisterhood. However, if you find yourself outgrowing your friendship while your sister-friend is comfortable with being stuck, it is the time to freely and lovingly set your sister-friend free. You can love your sister-friend afar but at this point in your life, you are looking to live life to the fullest, discover your innermost passion and purpose in life. In life, you outgrow people, friendships and relationships and it is okay to love from afar. No love lost!
  3. When your sister-friend only communicates with you via social media/group message/ignores you. When you go from communicating with your sister-friend weekly to virtually never communicating with your sister-friend that's when you need to let them go freely. Life is too short to chase after someone'e love, life to too short for the wishy washy attitude, friendship or attention when they clearly don't want nor value your sisterhood no longer. Liking a photo on Facebook, not responding back to missed calls or voicemails or receiving a mass text message when a relative of the sister-friend in question dies doesn't equate to a sisterhood, it basically says "Hey, you are no longer apart of my sisterhood and I passively moved forward without informing you." That's so hurtful because you valued, respected, and love your sister-friend but obviously she no longer feel that way about you. Sister-friends should be honest and open about the obvious dysfunction or lack of communication. If a fellow sister-friend offended you, instead of being passive-aggressive, lovingly and assertively discuss the issues because that sister-friend is probably in the dark about the offense or underlying conflict/issue.
I value, respect and love my circle of sisterhood. Sisterhood is powerful because we are all interconnected, have similar stories, tragedies and triumphs. When I evaluate those who are in my sacred circle of sisterhood, I am proud because my sister-friends are amazing, strong, educated, diverse and different. I am able to be transparent, vulnerable and authentic with them. My sister-friends deal with my business side, my cray cray side, silly side, and the Brown Girl From Boston side. I appreciate them and love them very dearly. I am also able to celebrate, cry, coach and call out my sister-friends when needed.

I also learn how to love my former sister-friends from afar and release them with love. It is never easy to release nor love a close/best sister-friend from afar. When a sister-friend is constantly negative, stuck in life, doesn't communicate and don't respect the circle of sisterhood, they no longer serve you purpose.

I am going to end this post with a powerful song lyric from a strong sisterhood, TLC from one of their early hits, "What About Your Friends"

What about your friends
Will they stand their ground
Will they let you down again
What about your friends are they gonna be low down
Will they ever be around or will they turn their backs on you

Question to our readers: Do your circle of sisterhood empowers you or drain your energy? Let's talk about it.

July's Theme: Celebrating Your FLYness

"Stop being everything to everybody. It is time to celebrate you." -Anonymous

Happy 1st day of July! July is a month full of celebrations, events, sun and fun. I decided to write a quick blog to help those are currently stuck being everything to everybody, on the verge of burn out, and just sick and tired of being sick and tired. Today, is the day in which you can start something beautiful and celebrate your flyness!

After this past winter, I decided that I am going to spend my warmer days, enjoying the beauty of nature by spending everyday outdoors. Dealing with the Polar Vortex killed every vibe and motivation that I had. I am thankful for the warmer weather because I love riding my bike on various bike paths, I decided to grow beautiful flowers to witness growth and transition, and I get to go on vacations and indulge on new memories and experiences with my love ones.

If you are unsure on how to spend your Summer 2014, I will provide some helpful hints, tips and sites to celebrate your FLYness and get your creative juices flowing. Let your hair down, stop being hard on yourself and enjoy yourself.

  1. Learn a new hobby!  Have you ever wanted to learn how to swim? Take swimming lessons. Now is the time to learn a new hobby because the nights are longer, weather is warmer and why not now? (http://www.findmeahobby.com/)
  2. Volunteer! Serving others is a great way to have fun, connect and serve the community and the people. Make a positive impact in one's life by giving your time, smiling and energy to serve others. Sign up to be a Big Brother/Big Sister. Help plant a garden within your community. Just do it! (http://www.volunteermatch.org/)
  3. Complete an uncompleted project! Don't wait until the Fall to complete that project you've been working on. Working on a blog, event, home improvement, book and etc....why wait to launch until it is complete. It may not ever become complete if you are waiting for it to be "perfect". Just launch it because life and that project is a work in progress.
  4. Start a side hustle! Looking to start a side hustle to turn into your full time gig. Look within and rediscover your passion and purpose in life. Jot down your passion, gifts and strengths and start your side hustle. Don't over analyze, get into your heart and start your side hustle.
  5. Get Moving! Someday is not a actual day. You want to increase your happiness, look good and feel good. Get moving. There are so many free physical activities within your community that is going on for the summer. These activities consist of Zumba in the park, walk/run challenges and more. Check you local city and town website, libraries or social media networks for free physical activities within your city. Make sure you stay hydrated with water, wear sunscreen and have fun!
  6. Take a vacation! I try to take at least three major vacations and multiple mini vacations (getaways) a year. As human beings, we need to recharge, re energize, and live rather than exist. When you don't take a vacation, you suffer from burn out, depressions, headaches, and heartaches. You are never too busy to take a vacation. You make your schedule and in charge of your FLYness! Remember to stay FLY (First Love Yourself)! (http://www.parenting.com/gallery/51-mini-family-vacations)
  7. Start a Summer Reading list! I love to read and I make time to read extra books during the summertime. I make a summer reading list to keep me in check on reading and obtaining more knowledge. I am a learning of life and I enjoy thriving and striving for excellence. It keep my mind active and creative. Check out Brown Girl From Boston 2014 Summer reading list (http://www.browngirlfromboston.com/2014/06/brown-girl-from-bostons-2014-summer.html)
  8. Attend a workshop/class/conference! There are so many workshops, classes, and conferences that occur during the summertime. Some are free and affordable. Learning shouldn't stop over the summer or as an adult. Check out Eventbrite, Google and your local community centers for an upcoming workshop. (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-pursuit-of-passion-and-purpose-group-coaching-workshop-tickets-11979195095)
  9. Attend a festival, outdoor concert and event! I am a lover of music, local artists and food. I love attend outdoor events when all three are included.  There are so many festivals, fairs and outdoor concerts that occur only during the summertime and you don't want to miss out. I love traveling to other states to check out their festivals such as the Essence Music Festival in NOLA or the Food Truck Festivals in New England. Make sure you check out these free or affordable festivals. Check out Summer Music Festival Junkies for the music lovers (http://www.musicfestivaljunkies.com/) and Fodor's for all the foodies (http://www.fodors.com/news/photos/10-best-us-summer-food-festivals-for-2014)
  10. Home Improvement/Organizing Projects! "When you house is a mess, your life is a mess." How many of you ever heard of that saying? Now, is the time to de-clutter your home, organize and freshen up your safe haven. Do you have clothes in your closet that you don't wear? If so, now is the time to start de-cluttering your closets. If you haven't worn something in over a year, either donate or give it away. Throw away old magazines, newspaper, paper and things that no longer serve it's purpose. (http://www.realsimple.com/home-organizing/organizing/donate-clothes-10000001043865/)
Remember, this is your time to celebrate your FLYness! Stop saying yes to everybody and everything and start saying yes to you and your happiness. Until next time!

How are you celebrating your FLYness and summertime? We look forward to hearing from you.

XOXO,
Drea
